Carbon Footprint Reduction for Your Business

More and more organisations are becoming increasingly aware of their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment. No matter how large or small your business is, there are steps you can take to cut your carbon footprint.

Work Towards ISO 40001 Certification

ISO 14001 Certification shows stakeholders, customers and employees that an organisation is aware of its environmental impact and is working towards reducing it. The certification is the international standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system and provides a framework for companies to follow to ensure they're environmentally responsible.

Identify Areas Where You Can Reduce Waste

Are there any areas where your organisation is being wasteful? For example, are you using too much packaging to send items to customers? Is the packaging you use from sustainable sources? Are you printing off material that you could store digitally instead? Whilst some of these may just be creating small amounts of excess waste, cutting down on lots of small things can add up to a massive change and a significant reduction in an organisation's overall carbon footprint.

Recycle Everything You Can

If your organisation isn't currently recycling waste, now is the time to begin. Recycling at every stage of a business is crucial to cutting down on your carbon footprint. Make it as easy as possible for everyone in the organisation to recycle at every step and have recycling stations easily marked so employees can utilise them correctly.

Using recycled materials is another great way to reduce environmental impact. Using recycled paper, packaging, and other materials instead of primary production material lowers carbon emissions and reduces what you send to landfills.

Consider Your Suppliers

If your organisation has to order supplies, products or parts from other businesses, consider whether switching to a local supplier could be the right option. Transport of items, especially from abroad, has a sizeable associated carbon footprint. If you can cut your supplies' transport distance, you will dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of your organisation.

Increase Office Efficiency

Simple changes like changing from halogen lighting to more efficient lighting options such as LED can make a big difference in the workplace, especially a large one. Other changes, such as lights that automatically switch off when nobody is using a room, will also reduce energy waste.

Effectively using temperature controls for heating and cooling systems in office buildings can help reduce energy waste. Keeping them serviced to ensure they're working as efficiently as possible can also help.
