Accreditation
Anyone can give you a piece of paper saying that you are ISO certified, but not everyone is accredited to do so. It is imperative that you check whether that certification body has accreditation, so you can be sure that your ISO 9001 certificate holds value. If you also want to be sure that your certification will be accepted universally, you should choose a body that is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). You can then be assured that the certification body you choose to work with has been assessed against internationally recognised standards to prove competence, impartiality and performance capability.
Recognition
A certification body that has a recognised brand in delivering quality services to ISO 9001 will help give assurance to your stakeholders and clients that you mean business. Choose a certification body whose name is well recognised within your own industry.
Even though a certification body may be well known and has a great reputation they may not be right for your organisation. If an auditor doesn't have a lot of experience in your sector or industry, you may lose time explaining your processes, with the result being him learning from you, rather than the reverse. Do not be afraid to ask who exactly your auditor will be and request a copy of their CV and/or a list of companies they have audited. It is also important to identify if the certification body can provide evidence of a track record in your sector, ask for a recommendation from one of their clients. If this is not willingly provided it should ring an alarm bell!
