Energy Management; Audits and Improvements for ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is the Environmental Management Standard, and it details the criteria for organisations implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS). An EMS is put in place to help organisations manage their environmental responsibilities. In most businesses, a massive part of this is to do with energy and how energy management and energy audits can help organisations reduce their impact on the environment and the world around us.

An energy audit is a comprehensive survey and an analysis of all energy use within an organisation. We find them useful for businesses of all sizes, no matter how large or small, as they highlight measures to save energy and make significant savings on bills related to energy use.

Identifying areas where energy is being wasted and taking steps to cut down on this waste can drastically reduce your organisation's carbon footprint and show your commitment to this. With ISO 14001 certification, you can clearly show your stakeholders, customers, and team members that your organisation is committed to reducing environmental impact, enhancing your company image.

ISO 50001 for High Energy Businesses

ISO 50001 is a specific Energy Management Standard and is generally more suited for large businesses and those that use high amounts of energy, although this isn't always the case. ISO 50001 is specifically designed to improve energy performance, reduce energy usage and reduce CO2 emissions.

ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 are similar to each other in many ways, as the subject of sustainability, energy usage and environmental impact are all interconnected. ISO 14001 looks at environmental protection in general, whereas ISO 50001 looks specifically at energy usage on its own.

Both ISO Standards use the Annex-SL High Level Structure, which means it's simple to implement the two with each other. ISO 50001 helps with the Government Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme. By completing the ISO Standard, organisations have already met all the government scheme criteria and then simply need to inform the Environment Agency of this.

ISO 14001, ISO 50001, or Both?

Our expert consultants are here to help organisations with working towards ISO Standards. We can help you determine whether your organisation would be better working towards ISO 14001, ISO 50001 or maybe both.

This advice will depend on whether your organisation is more committed to reducing your overall environmental impact, working towards becoming more energy-efficient, or whether both are equally as important.

We'll work with you to gain knowledge on your business size and industry so we can give you the best advice on what ISO Standard would be best suited to your needs and goals.

If you want to find out more about which ISO Standard would be best for your organisation, our team are ready to help you. Call us today for an informal chat on how we can assist.
