ISO 9001
ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management. A quality management system outlines a set of policies, processes and procedures for management to implement, which aims to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of business operation.
The ISO 9001 outlines eight quality management principles: customer focus, leadership, involvement of people, process approach, system approach to management, continual improvement, factual approach to decision making, and mutually beneficial supplier relationships.
These vital aspects of business operation can provide a process approach for project execution, streamline operations, and build a stronger and more sustainable business.
But it doesn’t have to be complicated.

What does ISO 9001:2015 Require:
ISO9001 has been criticised in the past for being too much about creating and maintaining paperwork. This version of the standard reduces the requirement for documents for the sake of it. That’s meant to make using the standard more attractive to smaller businesses, whilst still delivering the benefits.
The main ISO 9001:2015 areas of focus are:
- Ensure that you measure and correctly assess the input and output of processes. Start where you can, from data you already have, but monitor and analyse it. This allows you to make more informed decisions in your business. This is something that a lot of smaller companies struggle with, but it doesn’t have to be complicated, and the payback and awareness that it brings can be considerable.
- Implement ‘risk-
based thinking’. Use risk analysis to decide which challenges you see in the management of your business. Then decide how you will tackle them. On the flip side of that, consider the opportunities you have and which ones you want to pursue. Yes, this is something that you will probably already be doing as a senior manager in a business, (providing you aren’t so busy doing the work!) You need to spend time working ‘on’ the business as well as ‘in’ the business and ISO 9001:2015 assists in this process.
- Understand and responds to the expectations of all interested parties. Take into account the needs and expectations of these parties as they make your business thrive. Suppliers, personnel, shareholders, legislative bodies, society, internal customers, amongst others, are now included as interested parties, in addition to your customers.
- Top management should have greater involvement in, and take greater responsibility for, controlling the quality management system.
- Learn. Learn well. There are many methods you can use but you need to get to the root causes of things to learn and improve. Don’t just deal with immediate causes, because you’ll get the same things re-
appearing, almost immediately!
