Data-Driven Decision Making and ISO Standards

Data-driven decision making in relation to ISO Standards is the idea that decisions should be made based on the careful analysis of data and available information, rather than made using gut instinct, guesswork or some other form of decision making. ISO states;

Effective decisions are based on the analysis of data and information. Other performance statistics or indicators, such as timeliness and conformance to the specification, user satisfaction survey results and supplier performance records should also be collected in the data and analysis process. Facts, evidence and data analysis lead to greater objectivity and confidence in decision making” [source]

ISO Standards are guidelines for organisations and aim to establish a worldwide standard for different things; for example, with ISO 14001, the focus is on Environmental Management and ISO 9001 on Quality Management. The information generated by an ISO system must be analysed and used to guide data-driven decision making (also referred to as evidence-based decision making).

Organisations must take steps to ensure their data-driven decision making is as effective as it possibly can be. ISO recommends that organisations determine, measure, and monitor key indicators to demonstrate performance, ensure that all relevant data is available to all those who need access, is as accurate as possible, and is stored safely and securely.

Organisations should also be careful to analyse and evaluate all data and information using suitable, measurable methods and that those who are analysing data are competent and knowledgeable enough to do so.

The data can then be used to make clear decisions and take actions based on evidence, and can be used to improve performance, integrate new processes, concepts, and strategies, and help strive towards operational excellence.

Organisations can use the data for both internal and external reports. These reports can demonstrate and inform stakeholders, suppliers, and other parties. Reporting can help improve relationships with other parties and help influence sustained success. By obtaining various ISO standards, organisations demonstrate to stakeholders, customers, and staff that they are aware of moral and legal obligations and have done the work needed to meet these, improving a company’s reputation and performance.

We offer professional, customised health, safety, environmental, fire and quality management solutions. We partner with companies to help them comply with their legal and moral duties whilst positively impacting financial and business performance. If you’d like to speak to a member of our team to discuss ISO Standards and how these can help with decision making in your organisation, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
