Stress Assessments: A Legal Requirement

Work-related stress can be debilitating and have very adverse effects on workers’ physical and mental health. Research has found that around 13.7 million working days are lost each year in the UK because of work-related stress, anxiety and depression, more than half of all lost working days. These lost days cost more than £28 billion every single year [source]. Additionally, 23% of adults say that work causes them stress, [source] so employers must take this seriously and do all they can to safeguard their workers.

As part of the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) Working Minds campaign, they have launched a free-to-use interactive tool that lets businesses know how to comply with workplace stress laws. The tool comprises six modules that guide employers through relatable scenarios, like how to recognise signs of stress in employees and what to do about it.

The tool helps employers follow five simple steps based on risk assessment: reach out, recognise, respond, reflect, and routine.

HSE say, “The tool provides the simple and effective guidance employers need to take action to meet their legal duties and begin to understand how to include stress in their workplace risk assessments.”

Employers have a legal duty to assess the risk of work-related stress, so this free tool from the HSE may be suitable for some organisations. However, to ensure you’re meeting your legal obligations, you may wish to bring in an outside company to do a stress assessment for your company. Our experienced consultants can take the worry of getting it right off your hands and carry out thorough stress assessments so your business can determine the steps and actions needed to lower work-related stress.

Our team can work with you to ensure you know what the law requires of you as an employer and what actions you need to take to be compliant, reduce work-related stress and support good mental health in the workplace.

With stress, depression and anxiety being the top reasons for employees taking time off work, businesses must take this seriously and take positive steps towards protecting their employees.

Head of work-related stress policy at HSE, Liz Goodwill, said, “The Mental Health and Employers report from Deloitte suggests employers see a return of £5.30 on average for every £1 invested in staff wellbeing.”

If your business needs help carrying out stress assessments, Risg Solutions can assist. Our team of experienced and knowledgeable consultants will be able to carry out thorough stress assessments to highlight areas you can improve upon to reduce your team’s stress and improve their mental and physical health.
